This month, our Pre-K 4 students took a closer look at the people who keep our community safe, healthy, and cared for. Through our Community Helpers unit, they learned that helping others is one of the most important jobs there is, and that every helper plays a part in God’s plan for our community.
Our young learners started by talking about safety and learning how and when to call 9-1-1. They explored the roles of police officers, firefighters, doctors, chefs, construction workers, and many others, and they had a wonderful time dressing up as the helpers they admire most.
Learning came to life in the classroom, too. Students built their very own community, creating houses, a hospital, and streets for their town, and worked together to place each building where it belonged. As part of a Great Pumpkin Investigation, they measured pumpkins, studied them up close with magnifying glasses, and recorded what they discovered.
To close the unit, our students made Heart Hugs in class, paper hearts with arms ready to wrap around someone special. Children and their families then took them out into the Key Biscayne community and gave them to the helpers who care for us every day, from police officers and construction workers to community center staff. We are especially grateful to our maintenance, security and our building security officer, who looks after our school family each day.
Thank you to every community helper who stopped to smile, pose, and accept a Heart Hug from our littlest Bears. And thank you to our Pre-K 4 families for helping our students share their gratitude beyond the classroom. Through this unit, our students learned that serving others is a beautiful way to put our JOY into action: Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last.
